With her new Christmas special: Mariah Carey's Magical Christmas Special set to debut today (Dec. 4), on AppleTV+, Mariah has released her visual for her updated 2010 Christmas tune, "Oh Santa!" For the update, the legend recruits none other than the pop queen, Ariana Grande and the Shea Buttery, vocal powerhouse that is Jennifer Hudson.
The two, whom also appear in the Christmas special take the 2010 hit to higher levels with shattering, world-ending tones and notes that could erupt the very core of the Earth. The visual is as cinematic and dramatic as one would expect for the likings of the iconic Mariah. If it doesn't bring you utter holiday joy, then I really don't know what else will. From the moment the video begins, listeners experience a true production. In just a little over 3 minutes, Mariah, J-Hud, and Ariana create this unforgettable moment in music.
The video radiates a Motown-like appeal as the three come together on a stage with Mariah leading the troupe. Surrounded by dancing elves, the magic from the song flows from the screen into viewers hearts as the trio belt, shout, and deliver both a flawless record and visual. While no-one would have expected to see these women grace a track together, this is truly such a moment. The vocal show these women put on literally draws chills throughout your body as they effortlessly blow throughout this entire track. Ariana and Jennifer Hudson provide chilling background vocals in the beginning, while Mariah holds down the main fort.
Immediately following, the three flawlessly harmonize together on the second verse bringing that feel good, soul-cradling essence to the holiday pop banger. The three each bring their own tastes to the song to create this whimsical wonder. Jennifer delivers those small but heavy soulful inflections; Ariana adds that sultry sensational pop feeling; And Ms. Carey brings the theatrical legendary delivery in only a way she could.
The most moving moment arrives at the end of the video, when the three flat-out flex their vocal displays. Again, Jennifer brings that explosive soulful vocal control that has made her a household name for so many years. Meanwhile, Ariana and Mariah go back and forth with a battle of whistle notes that leave you ready to see Jesus. I never knew three women invented Christmas, but clearly it was these three.
"Oh Santa!" literally feels great playing and even better viewing. It exhibits such a joyous energy that this year has been stripped of in various ways. In a way, it's overwhelming because it just brings such emotion as you both listen to and watch them on screen. It gives you hope even if it's just for the holidays (and we all need a little hope).
