Jazmine Sullivan and H.E.R. Bring the House Down on "Girl Like Me"

Updated: Jan 7, 2021

Happy New Year! Now that 2020 is behind us, the only way to look now is... forward! Only 6 days into the new year, and Jazmine Sullivan is already applying pressure! With her third straight release, the soulful powerhouse is back again. This time, the hearty crooner teams up with longtime fan and fellow vocal master, H.E.R, for the acoustic-appealing, "Girl Like Me."

With her upcoming EP, "Heaux Tales" set to drop Friday (Jan. 8), the Philly singer released the powerful track today (Jan. 6). Over the somber, minimalistic production, Jazmine tells the tale of being abandoned by her lover for another woman. Due the relationship's ending, Jazmine begins to internalize the issues of the failed relationship. She questions her physical appearance, her internal / external characteristics, and more. She wonders if it is even worth it to be this "good girl" in the end when she seems to come up on the short end of the stick. She even ponders on why the "hoes" continue to win and the good women continue to lose.

"You must'vе wanted somethin' different

Still don't know what I was missin'

What you asked I would've given

It ain't right how these hoes be winnin'

Why they be winnin'? Yeah (Why they be? Why they be?)

No hope for a girl like me, how come they be winnin'? Yeah

(How they be? How they be?)

And I ain't wanna be

But you gon' make a hoe out of me."

H.E.R. swiftly follows up pondering the same exact thing. She asks if she looked more like a stripper, would that be the solution to make things work between her lover and she. Listeners can hear that the Bay area singer is at her wit's end with the "good girl shit" and she's tired of playing the game the right way just to continuously lose each round.

The magic truly radiates when the two blend their voices together. It is almost eerie how much the two sound like. The pair put on an utter show as they bring the house down singing about wanting different in their relationships. By the end of the track, both Jazmine and H.E.R. literally chant at the top of their lungs how men cause these feelings within them and make them acknowledge their role in these situations.

"Y'all n*ggas be makin' us sad (Makin' us mad)

Then say y'all don't know why we mad (Know why we mad)

So, we start actin' like we don't care

'Cause y'all n*ggas be takin' us there (Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh)

'Cause you don't want us no more (Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh)

It breaks us to the core, woah, woah, ooh."

Having dropped 3 purely amazing singles, we only have two days until we are gifted with a brand-new Jazmine Sullivan project. That's right, a Jazmine Sullivan EP to start 2021. Heaux Tales is already looking incredible with a small list of features from incredible talents such as Ari Lennox, H.E.R., and Anderson .Paak. The new project follows after Sullivan's 2015 album, Reality Check. We are ready when you are Jazmine.
